Mining Companies and Stock Certificates

Are shares of old mining companies' stock valuable?

Generally, the answer is no. If the company listed on a stock certificate was incorporated in Arizona or the Arizona Territory, you can determine if the company is still active, or when and under what circumstances it became inactive, by calling the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) at 602-542-3026 or toll free in Arizona at 800-345-5819. They will provide basic information on the company. This information can be acquired by sending a fax to the ACC at 602-542-3414. You may also search the ACC's Corporation Division records database. Additional information sources to consult are available at the ACC Securities Division's stock inquires web page.

If the company is inactive, an original certificate in good condition may still be of nominal value as a collectible.

What information is available about mining companies?

If you would like information on the Arizona mine or mines at which a company was active, DMMR may be able to provide information. Additionally, DMMR's reference library contains annual industry directories along with periodicals that report on many companies' exploration and mining activities.

DMMR produces an annual Directory of Active Mines listing companies mining in Arizona. To order, see the Department Publications List section of this web site.
